On the Laughing
Madcaps list, there's been a lot of information about a long Pink
Floyd song call In The Beechwoods. The list moderator Kiloh Smith
can talk about it best... and definately read the letter. I've posted
this information mainly for Echoesians.

Subject: EXCITING NEWS!!!!
Hello group- I have
some very, very exciting news! A member of our group,
that digs what we do and was around in the 1960's, has sent me a copy
of
some never-previously-unearthed Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett.
This is from a 1969
radio broadcast and features an interview with Nick
Mason. Nick Mason then introduces the legendary In The Beechwoods
track. He
calls it: "Beechwoods". The instrumental track that has
made the rounds for
years and years IS NOT In The Beechwoods. It's something entirely
different.
The In The Beechwwods
that I have is 4:49 in length. It's introduced as
"Beechwoods" by Nick Mason. It's a guitar jam song that's
obviously Syd. It
sounds very "Swinging London In The Sixties". Then there's
a wild organ
swirl that goes round and round and round near the end. This song
has NEVER
BEEN SEEN before. It's just surfaced now.
The next track is
the original 1967 mix down of Vegetable Man.
The final track
is an instrumental run through of Vegetable Man. This is
3:27 in length. Again, I think that this is an entirely new addition
to
trader's circles.
The copy I have
is a CD clone of the 1969 cassette master. I think Dave
Parker was sent a copy too.
Wow. In The Beechwoods.
Finally.

<Is the tape an amateur 'off air' recording of the original broadcast?>
Yes, that means
a 1969 cassette. It's still pretty decent sounding. The very
beginning of In The Beechwoods is marred by Nick Mason talking. Then
it's
just music. It's like a swinging, rhythm, sound with spaced out organ.
Then,
near the end, the organ really starts swirling around & around.
I'll listen
to it again. I'll send copies to people that worked on HYGIY? They
are
musicians themselves. They can clean it up more. They can give their
opinion. My opinion? I'm tone deaf. It's either "good" or
it "sucks".
I'm really excited
by the Vegetable Man instrumental track. No lyrics, just
the band jamming out Vegetable Man. This might even be the backing
track.
Again, we'll need somebody else to give it a listen and report back.
I'm
tone deaf.
The original 1967
mix of Vegetable Man sounds good too. Again, we'll need an
"expert" opinion on the differences. It is different.
I'll listen to it
again and try to give a better report back to you all.
It's only three tracks. All three are part of this 1969 Nick Mason
interview.

It's a fairly rough
recording, but still listenable.
> Can you describe
Syd's guitar work?
Mainly frenetic
rhythm during 'Beechwoods' (Rick Wright is much in
evidence), very upfront lead/rhythm during the Vegetable Man instrumental.
> Any studio
chatter??
None.
> Does it sound
like a finished backing track or more like a rough jam?
'Beechwood' sounds
like a backing track which needs a bit of tidying up, the
'Vegetable Man' instrumental sounds like a rough jam.
Nick Mason makes
the comment that 'Beechwood' was written by Syd shortly
after 'Emily', whilst he says that 'Vegetable Man' was the last thing
they
recorded with him (which doesn't quite tie up with the existance of
'Apples
and Oranges':-).
Best Wishes
David
